I read an interview from someone on Murdoch Mysteries today that got me thinking. The powers-that-be mentioned the relationship between Murdoch and Julia as being a sub-story, and that seems to be the thinking of a lot of directors in the ship worthy shows.
Why is that? Why a sub-story? It’s annoying, yes we get the whole story is important and the relationship in the story is not the main focus, but you simply can not wake the beast, stuff it in a cage, refuse to feed it and then get all shocked, shattered and shaken when it roars and claws at you.
Take Murdoch Mysteries, in the beginning of season one Murdoch shares a friendship with Julia but it is very clear there is nothing more to it than that, as he is still mourning the terrible loss of his fiance. It did not occur to me to even ship him with anyone, I figured this would be another of the many non-ship shows and that there would be the love of the week as the series went on but nothing ship-worthy, and here is a little hint PTB, I enjoyed the show and I looked forward to it every week, you already had my full attention!
Of course by the fifth or sixth episode things were changing and Murdoch suddenly seemed to see Julia as something more than a friend and so the ship began, by the middle of season two it was full sail underway and no it was not a sub-story it was very much the main theme behind many of the episodes and of course season 2 cliff hanger and season 3 cliff hangers both hang completely on that relationship. Now you had not only my attention you had my shipper heart doing little joy joy cartwheels!
The same can be said for Bones, really HH I was quite happy with B&B the way there were pre season 4! I watched the show, loved it and enjoyed the friendship between the two of them, in fact I didn’t really like the whole mistletoe kiss in season 2, I thought they looked awkward together (though I have since seen the entire kiss that was cut for TV and found nothing awkward about that..hehe) and I was quite content for them to carry on with their relationship as friends and partners even during the whole of season 4 (which I might add is still and remains my favorite season of Bones, there were some awesome eppy’s in 4) until the finale… WOW!! You blew my socks off and woke up my shipper obsession with a mighty roar. Then season 5 you wrung my heart out but I had complete and utter faith in you, I loved the conflict I adore every single episode and watched them over and over, savoring every moment, I actually cried on that finale. Yeah, then you gave me Spannah… I have no words!
My point is, y'all created wonderful show’s that drew in the viewers quite fine without needing any help, why mess with that? Sure you probably did get more viewers by starting the ship, you certainly got more controversy over it, which got the fan’s talking and I should imagine got more people wanting to know what the fuss was about, but at what cost?
You woke up a very hungry beast for a few more viewers and now you are faced with a dilemma, because make no mistake a ship gone wrong can kill the show deader and faster than a few bad episodes. For all the talk to the contrary this season of Bones is not doing as well as the last season did or even the beginning did, it's sinking fast, which is I imagine why Hannah poofed in a cloud of "I don't want to be tied down..." (seriously? La-ame!) , but the damage has been done, I still watch it and yes my sisters still watch the show but we have moved on, and I’m thinking that if it continues on with this lame ass will-they won’t-they spin I’m going to be watching something else on Thursday nights.
Oh and that red guy up there, that's me on a good day.
